Sapperton, Gloucestershire | Cotswolds | Sleeps 6 | Dog Friendly
INTRODUCTIONDeep within the heart of the Bathurst Estate (or Cirencester Park, as it’s known locally one of Gloucestershire’s most historic privately owned estates covering about 16,000 acres of the County and family seat of The Earls & Countesses Bathurst since 1695, there lies a little gem.
Apsley Cottage is a beautiful Cotswold Stone ‘Arts & Crafts’ period building dating back to 1908, named after The 1st Baron Apsley (The 2nd Earl Bathurst) and originally designed by Lilias, Countess Bathurst, the wife of The 7th Earl and it nestles in the heart of the village of Sapperton, an area that remains very much part of the family concern itself.
Completely renovated in 2013 and launched in May, this gorgeous little 3 bedroom house has the feel of a real home from the moment you step through the door into the fabulous interior.

Very well equipped with bright skylight, down lighting, granite work surface, induction hob, electric oven and grill, fridge, dishwasher, electric whisk, electric food processor, microwave, plus wine cooler and iPod dock/clock/radio. The kitchen overlooks the extended hall area that leads to the double doors opening onto the terrace and within this area sits a beautiful oak dresser. Both windows have beautifully hand-made tweed blinds, again made locally and with local tweed.
Freezer, washing machine/tumble dryer, iron and ironing board, vacuum, mop & bucket.
Funky tiles, down lighting, air-extractor, WC and washbasin (and spare logs).
Luxurious down lighting, a large dining table plus six dining chairs, sideboard, display cabinet, roll-top desk (containing local guides and local attraction information leaflets) leading to living area.
More subtle down lighting and lamps, a large plump sofa, additional armchairs, wood burning stove, flat-screen TV with Freeview/DVD player. Beautifully hand-made, floor-length interlined tweed curtains, all made as before, locally and with gorgeous locally woven tweed. A choice of reading material and DVD’s are also available.
THE BLUE ROOM
Chandelier lit, with double bed (4ft 6in) and duo-season mattress, all season anti-allergy duvet, (extra blanket if needed), anti-allergy pillows, dressing table, built in wardrobe, plus wall-mounted flat-screen TV with Freeview/DVD, an iPod dock and hair dryer. Beautifully hand-made floor-length, interlined tweed curtains, once more made locally.
THE LAVENDER ROOM
Chandelier lit, with double bed (4ft 6in), and duo-season mattress, all season anti-allergy duvet, (extra blanket if needed), anti-allergy pillows, built-in wardrobe, plus wall-mounted flat-screen TV with Freeview/DVD and IPod dock. Beautifully hand-made tweed window blinds and yes – you’ve guessed it! – they’re made locally and with fabric from Cotswold Woollen Weavers.
THE RED ROOM
Chandelier lit, with single bed, all season anti-allergy duvet, (extra blanket if needed), anti-allergy pillows, built-in wardrobe, plus wall-mounted flat-screen TV with Freeview/DVD, and iPod dock. Beautifully hand-made tweed window blinds, made locally. It is this bedroom that has a pull out divan for a sixth guest.
Luxurious down lighting, with P-shape bath and wall mounted shower, wall-mounted towel rail, WC and washbasin with bathroom cabinet and mirror, with overhead light & electric shaving point.
The garden surrounds the cottage and the large stone ‘sunken’ terrace, with ample lighting, is accessed via double doors from the kitchen/living area – or the kitchen – or the front door! It comes complete with Cotswold Stone built-in barbecue, a large table with chairs, as well as a wooden garden bench that overlooks the garden and village countryside. It faces almost South and so enjoys unbroken sunshine nearly all day. Magical! The garden is well fenced, or has a solid Cotswold stone wall to the front – this means that, with the gates closed, Apsley Cottage enjoys a complete boundary.
There is ample off road parking for up to three cars – or even four!
Apsley Cottage Guest Book
It’s only natural that we’re going to ‘wax lyrical’ about how lovely the cottages are and of course we’re going to be positive, because we want you to fall in love with them! But there is nothing more powerful than the views of others, and so we thought you’d like to see what past visitors have said about their stay..
Over to our lovely guests...

The cottage has been perfect for us, as has the location. We have appreciated all the thought that has clearly gone in to renovating the cottage and to making it available for holidaymakers. If you ever decide to put it on the market - give me a call!!
Peter-John, Jolien, Silke en Julie - Netherlands - (September 2017)
This was the third time we stayed in your lovely cottage where everything is provided for! We really love the Cotswolds with its outstanding beauty and fun things to do for the children (like the Cotswolds Farm park). We hope to come back soon!

We had a nice stay here in this cosy cottage and luck with the weather. Our dogs liked it too.
The Edge Family - Twickenham - (August 2017)
Despite the weather, we've thoroughly enjoyed our week at this fabulous cottage. Every detail is spot on and provides for a very comfortable and relaxing stay. We've explored the Slad valley, Tetbury, Westonbirt Arboretum and loved being so close to Cirencester. Our dog thinks it's been a home away from home, especially with his own bed provided (in fact, far more comfortable than his one at home!) It has been a total treat here - thank you! P.S. The polo is a must if you get the chance.
Joanna, Penelope, Saskia & Mila - California - (July 2017)
A wonderful cottage for a family vacation.
Chris & Sam - Nottingham - (June/July 2017)

The Van der Meers - Netherlands - (April 2017)
We came from the airport and rented a car. Driving on the left side for the first time was both exciting and fun. We came into the lovely county and the 'Bathurst area' is just awesome. This lovely cottage felt like a home to me, Pien and the kids.
We enjoyed what the house had to offer. A fireplace, great kitchen, lovely couch and chairs to chill (like the kids like to say) and of course the bath and beautiful garden.
We stayed for a week and went to Cirencester, enjoyed Warwick Castle, got to see Oxford, did a beautiful tour in Bath with the Roman Bath house and enjoyed walking here in the forest.
A wonderful stay at a wonderful place and we met some wonderful people living in Sapperton. We will come back some day for sure!

Amazing sunsets outside the front door as well. Thank you!

We have had a lovely time in Apsley Cottage. I slept in the little pink room with the pull out bed. Also, I loved playing with doggie and bear although Bear did have a few accidents :( His leg fell off! So me and my grandma went to boots and bought him a bandage and wrapped it up :)
The Bianco Family - Italy - (August 2016)

Var, Jennifer, Vivie & Ivo - Florida, USA - (June/July 2016)
Vivie: This is our third stay at Apsley Cottage and we LOVE it! I like the small bedroom with the trundle bed and the big garden. But my favourite part by far is playing with the stuffed animals, Doggie & Bear.
Ivo: APSLEY COTTAGE IS AWESOME!!! I like Bear and Doggie. I made a shadow puppet show featuring puppets of them. They also created a band with our stuffed animals; Julius, Gaspard, Bunny, Turtley, Little sheepy, Little sheepy 1 & Totoro. It is called 'The Friendly Octet'
The Loader Family - New Zealand - (June 2016)
We have loved our time in this gorgeous cottage - so very peaceful and charming, thank you! Best tip - use the books on the bookshelf to help you navigate your way around the best of the Cotswolds and also divert off the well-worn tracks to enjoy 'the real' Cotswolds. 'The Bell' was very welcome after a day of touring. Hope to come back one day.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were blessed with the warmest day of 2015 and glorious sun! It really felt as though we were staying in a close family or friends home rather than a holiday cottage. The attention to detail and extra comforts were noticed and very much appreciated. My son (19 months) and dog were in heaven in the garden, and very secure. We were beyond impressed with Apsley Cottage as well as the area and would very much like to return for an extended stay in the future. Thank you for opening your doors, it is such a gem! “The proof is in the putting”. We are returning in 2015 for another eleven week stay. If one does not appreciate Apsley Cottage, then one is a sad person. Ginny, Lady Bathurst’s PA is a constant help. Lady B even puts up with ‘colonials’, plus she is a charming person. The off street parking is amazing! The Cottage and the gardens speak for themselves! The ornamental grass garden is a plus!

We would especially recommend Crickley Hill Country Park, amazing views towards the Severn, and Wales. This was our first experience of watching polo and we were so pleased we took the opportunity given to us. Look forward to a return visit again sometime in the future.
The Turner Family (September 2013)
We returned to the Cotswolds having lived and worked in the area from 1974-1984. So many changes and memories! Apsley Cottage is a delightful conversion to modern and considered living in the heart of a beautiful area of England. Every possible touch given for the visitor’s comfort. Thank you for providing this all too brief opportunity to enjoy Cotswold Life in style.
Ian & Anne Miles, London (September 2013)
The house name should be changed to ‘Tranquility’ Cottage. Perfect for relaxing & renewing your energies. Perfect location for all the local amenities lovely Cirencester has to offer. This has to be the best cottage we’ve stayed in. Thank you so much for thinking of everything. It’s been a true pleasure all week, even the sun shone brightly! We recommend ‘The Bell’ for a drink or a meal – the coconut and chilli mussels are fantastic! For those who love getting away from it all and enjoy leisurely walks in the countryside we’d recommend you find ‘Cotswold Pub Walks’ by Colin Handy on the bookshelf! In particular walk 4, 5 and 20! This has been our first trip to The Cotswolds and we’ll definitely be back. Many thanks.
Camilla Sugden – Kuala Lumpur (July 2013)

I’m in heaven! What a wonderful rental cottage, a real home from home, everything and more one could want. From the warm and wonderful welcome from Ginny to the beautiful refurbishment of the cottage to the supply of every requirement you could possibly need. Jugs of fresh flowers everywhere, a dog basket fit for a king (Bramble, our Cocker spaniel puppy loved it!). The attention to detail was exemplary. The Countess and her team can be very proud of the project that they have delivered and we hope to return soon or visit one of the other cottages on the Bathurst Estate. Thank you and see you & Mr Apsley soon!

The Bishop family – Windsor, Berkshire (May 2013)
Beyond a doubt, one of the loveliest and most welcoming cottages that we have ever stayed in (and we have stayed in a lot!) From the warm welcome on arrival, the basket of delicious local goodies, the cosiness of the rooms to the complete attention to detail that cannot but make any family feel at home and relaxed. The walks around Sapperton on a sunny spring day were loved by all. This is a very special place. Thank you for all you have done to make us feel so welcome. Our children also made some lovely friends on the Village green.
